Mâcon Rouge

Appellation Mâcon Rouge
Cépage Gamay
Grape variety and "Terroir"

In the south of the Burgundy region, the Mâconnais district is situated between the plains of the Saône and the mountains of the Beaujolais region. To the south-west of Mâcon, the wine-growing area covers more granitic soils with steeper slopes and exposures varying from west to east-facing. These profiles of poorer soils, which limit the development of the vines, allow the production of smooth, delectable red wines despite their rather late maturity. The grape variety is 100% black Gamay with white juice, the required maturity potential is between 11 and 12°. This is established by visual inspection, measurement of density and sanitary testing.

Food and wine pairing

Ideally served at 14°, Mâcon rouge is best consumed young to discover the aromas of red berries, blackcurrants and raspberries with hints of spice. A prophet in its own country, Mâcon rouge goes perfectly with the local andouillette sausage and regional goat’s cheese, but it also does the honours with French family dishes such as pork sauté and game in a sauce. Chefs also recommend it with a medallion of foie gras garnished with cherries.

A bright red wine with purplish hues, offering intense notes of blackcurrants and blackberries. Very powerful from the onset, it is well-rounded throughout and has good persistence. The overall effect is harmonious. The wine can be drunk early but will benefit from being kept for a year.
